About the Founder and
1 in 4 Revolutionaries
Let me introduce myself, I am Robert the Founder of “1 in 4 Revolutionaries”. 1 in 4 People openly admit to experiencing Mental Health Problems in their lifetimes however this is just the tip of the iceberg.
Throughout my life I have faced challenges associated with complex mental health needs, childhood difficulties and my own unwillingness to seek help. This culminated in a major breakdown and being hospitalised in an acute mental health unit.
Since then, I have begun the slow process of rebuilding my life and addressing the years I masked my poor mental health. I have now got a shopping list of diagnosis and been on what seems like a never-ending list of different medications. Battled against barriers to services, stigma around diagnosis and learned a few things along the way. I have undertaken training in Personality Disorders (One of my Diagnostic Labels) Qualified to Facilitate training to professionals in engaging and working with people in this area. I have also undertaken qualifications such as Mental Health First Aid, Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training and gaining a separate Adult Teaching Qualification
I ran a social group for people in Lincoln with Personality related issues for nearly twelve years before handing over the reins to someone else to take on the challenge and develop the group further. I undertake talks at the University of Lincoln and at the Lincoln’s new Medical School and at various events in Lincolnshire and Newark.
So why have I founded “1 in 4 revolutionaries”? The answer is simple “Communication” – I have found that Services often pigeonhole people into diagnostic labels services and little groups. There is and has been for many years a lot of rhetoric about “seeing people as a whole person” but there seems to be very little progress. People are a lot more aware of Mental Health these days, but there is a big disconnect between mental health and wellbeing. Too often people are only helped by putting them in groups for people with poor mental health, and it becomes a socially isolating experience from the wider community.
I want to highlight there is so much more to wellbeing than poor mental or physical health. From gaining an appreciation of cultural, spiritual, philosophical differences and the need not only to connect but to participate and belong. I also want to do this in a manner that is more environmentally sustainable, personable, and honest way.
