PALLIATIVE CARE - Care that focuses on providing relief from the symptoms and stress of a serious illness

PANSEXUAL - A person whose emotional, romantic and/or sexual attraction towards others is not limited by biological sex, gender, or gender identity.

PEER FACILITATOR - A Peer Facilitator, is someone with “Lived Experience” and has been given additional training. They will assist people either on a one-2-one basis or in a group situation.

PERSONAL INDEPENDENCE PAYMENT - Is a non means tested benefit for people in the UK with long-term health conditions or disabilities, helping with the extra costs of living. PIP criteria’s and payments are under currently under government review.

PERSONALITY DIAGNOSTIC QUESTIONNAIRE – 4TH EDITION - Is a 99-item assessment that is used to screen for personality disorders as defined in the DSM-IV.

PERSONALITY DISORDER - In general, someone with a personality disorder will differ significantly from an average person in terms of how he or she thinks, perceives, feels or relates to others and their situation

PERSONALITY INVENTORY FOR DSM-5 (PID-5) - Adult is a 220 item self-rated personality trait assessment scale for adults age 18 and older. It is designed to highlight areas where the person might have difficulties with the way the think, or perceive, themselves or others, the world around them. It focusses on traits and is aligned to the DSM 5 (the current edition of the diagnostic statistical manual of mental disorder by the American Psychiatric Association

PERSONALITY INVENTORY FOR ICD-11 (PiCD) - The PiCD offers a modern approach to understanding personality traits, aligning with the ICD-11 framework for dimensional personality assessment. Unlike traditional diagnostic tools, the PiCD focuses on evaluating broad personality domains to provide a comprehensive overview of personality functioning. Only experimentally does it assign specific diagnoses, while generally offering a nuanced perspective on personality dynamics. This is designed for the ICD 11 (the current edition of the Internation Classification of Disease by the World Health Organisation)

PHOBIA - A phobia is an overwhelming and debilitating fear of an object, place, situation, feeling or animal. Phobias are more pronounced than fears. They develop when a person has an exaggerated or unrealistic sense of danger about a situation or object.

PODIATRIST - They are a specialist in the diagnosis and care of foot disorders, including medical and surgical treatment.

POLYVAGAL THEORY - Polyvagal Theory emphasizes the role the autonomic nervous system - especially the vagus nerve - plays in regulating our health and behaviour. This framework was developed by Stephen Porges, PhD. He uses this theory and framework to describe the physiological/psychological states which underlie our daily behaviour as well as challenges related to our wellness and mental health.

PROBATION OFFICER - They work to rehabilitate offenders. They supervise, counsel and help them before trial, during any prison or community sentence and on release from prison.

PRONOUN (or GENDER PRONOUNS) - Words used to refer to people’s gender in conversation - like, ‘he’ or ‘she’. Some people may prefer others to refer to them in gender neutral language and use pronouns such as they/their and ze/zir.

POST TRAUMATIC STRESS DISORDER (PTSD) - PTSD is a mental health condition triggered by experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event, leading to severe anxiety, flashbacks, and emotional distress

PSYCHE - Psyche refers to the mind, or the deepest thoughts, feelings, or beliefs of a person or group.

PSYCHIATRIC CLINICAL DECISIONS UNIT - The unit provides a safe space for patients to have a thorough assessment of their needs. Patients work with professionals to help decide the best treatment and support for them. The unit can care for up to six adults at a time, for up to 48 hours, in a safe environment away from A&E.

PSYCHIATRIST - A Psychiatrist or Consultant Psychiatrist is a trained doctor who specialises in diagnosing and treating people with mental health problems. A consultant psychiatrist will examine the different factors that may have contributed to a mental health problem and where appropriate prescribe medication.

PSYCHOLOGICAL INTERVENTIONS FACILITATOR - The Psychological Intervention Facilitator (PIF) role aims to deliver defined wellbeing-focused psychologically informed interventions, aligned to cognitive-behavioural principles. The PIF is a community-based role to support people to develop psychological intervention skills under the supervision of a trained therapist.

PSYCHOLOGIST - A Psychologist or Clinical Psychologist uses talking therapies to help patients resolve their problems. They often use a method called Cognitive Behavioural Therapy or Psychotherapy, and both involve talking about feelings and experiences
